Sunflower kernels recalled over possible listeria contamination

About 100 products are being recalled, affecting a large number of brands and grocery chains, including Planters Sunflower Kernels and trail mixes and trail mix bars sold at Walmart, Meijer, Top, Hy-Vee and Publix.

Consumers who have purchased any of these products are encouraged not to eat them. But what makes this truly massive is that sunflower seeds are also found in numerous other products including salad toppers and trail mix.

Recalled retail items were sold in clear printed plastic packages and are marked with Best By Dates located on the front or back of the packages.

The products were produced at SunOpta’s Crookston, Minnesota, facility between February 1st and 19th of this year.

Symptoms can include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

Kroger products sold across 28 states were recalled and pulled from shelves for listeria concerns, the FDA reported Tuesday. Customers with questions may call Giant Eagle Customer Care at 1-800-553-2324 Monday through Friday 9am to 9pm.

“Customers who have purchased the affected product should dispose of it or return it to their local Market District store for a refund”, Giant Eagle’s recall recommends.

Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle has recalled bulk sunflower nuts that were supplied by SunOpta and sold in the Pittsburgh area, as well as in central Ohio. The company said the products were sent to distribution centers in IL and North Dakota and may have been distributed nationwide.
