The Super Bowl saw one of its most epic and electrifying halftime shows ever tonight as Coldplay was joined by Beyonce and Bruno Mars for a celebration of 50 years of, well, epic halftime shows.

Known mainly for mellow hits, British alt-rockers Coldplay amped up the energy, staging “Viva La Vida” on a colorfully illuminated floor surrounded by dancing violinists.

The music video features powerful images of a flooded New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Just a day after she surprised fans with a new song, Formation, Beyonce performed the soon-to-be hit for Super Bowl viewers. As Martin sang, a supercut of halftime shows of yore played on screens and for the television audience.

Beyonce dominated the conversation on social media during the halftime performance, with 1.3 million tweets about the singer according to figures from Twitter. And while all eyes were on the performer’s sweet dance moves, Beyoncé quickly stole the show.
