Super Mario Surprise With iPhone Sends Shares of Nintendo Upward

Investors bet that the new game, known as Super Mario Run, is going to be another mobile victor for the company based in Japan that is akin to the hugely popular Pokemon Go, as the company moves from its strategy of focusing on consoles and embraces gaming on the go.

The surprise announcement by Nintendo that Super Mario the popular video game would debut on the new iPhone from Apple propelled shares much higher Thursday on the hopes the company had finally embraced the world of mobile gaming.

Although the trailer did not mention anywhere whether the game will be getting an Android release or not, Nintendo has said that Super Mario Run will definitely be available on Android smartphones and tablets as well but at a later date. The broader TOPIX edged down.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the puppet-inspired Mario character more than 35 years ago, gave a demonstration of the game at the iPhone launch on Wednesday.

Players control Mario through a series of obstacle courses while collecting coins along the way. The second mode will be composed of taking on the data of other players and finding out who can reach the end of the level in the most style.

On Japanese securities analyst said that launching a Nintendo character that is well known on the iPhone a globally penetrated mobile device is a best possible scenario that investors could have hoped for.

Super Mario Run’s price (it’s free to try) is yet to be announced. It finally announced a deal with with mobile specialist DeNA previous year, conceding to investor pleas. “It means the internal philosophy is changing and opening up, and it also means they’re going to get additional income streams, as opposed to their internal or organically generated revenues”.

Questions remain about how Nintendo will make money from its mobile games. “But for gamers of all ages, the story just hasn’t been complete without Mario, so we are thrilled that Nintendo is bringing him to iOS for the first time this December”.

Nintendo declined to comment on how revenue from the new game – which is free to download and play but some content has to be purchased – would be shared with DeNA.

Mario will run automatically from left to right in iOS
