Jamaica retained the gold medal in the Olympic 100 meter spring in Rio de Janeiro Saturday night, but Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce did not repeat – her teammate Elaine Thompson took the race.

Swimming, men’s 1500 meters freestyle: The world champion added a gold medal to his collection, as Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy swam a 14:34.57, beating Gabriele Detti of Italy as well (bronze), while Connor Jaeger set an American record to take bronze, although he did finish five seconds behind Paltrinieri.

Ryan Murphy also broke the world record for the 100 backstroke in the leadoff leg for the United States, clocking 51.85 seconds to eclipse the 51.94 that compatriot Aaron Peirsol swam in 2009.

World champion Allyson Felix will be going for her fifth career Olympic gold medal when she runs in the women’s 400-meter final.

“A gold medal is like a newborn baby”, said long jumper Jeff Henderson, who put the USA on the brink with gold No. 999 earlier Saturday night.

Sprinter Tori Bowie almost took the US over the top in the 100 metres but she was finished second behind Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson, leaving it up to the swimmers to complete the feat. “We were just kind of staking our claim in Rio, and I think we kind of did that in the pool as well”.

The two highest gold-medal totals in an individual Olympics for the USA came in years the country hosted – 1904 in St. Louis (76) and 1984 in Los Angeles (83).

Lovely, 1,000 times over now for the Americans.

Britain’s Mo Farah recovered from a fall on the 10th lap to win gold in the 10,000m final, defending the title he won four years ago in London. This makes him the first tennis player ever to win two singles gold medals.

Now the USA has reached a medal milestone in Rio.

Additionally, Maya Dirado and Nathan Adrian contributed a total of four medals to the U.S. Swim team with Ryan Murphy contributing three. Felix won her heat in the semifinals on Sunday in a season-best 49.67 seconds, the fastest time in the field.

The team of Katie Archibald, Laura Trott, Elinor Barker and Joanna Rowsell-Shand finishing in 4 minutes, 10.236 seconds, breaking its own world record of 4:12.152 set in the previous round.

The latter medal clinched the United States’ 1,000th Summer Olympics gold medal. That means the gold medal in the women’s eights on Saturday morning was the 21st for the Americans in Rio, and No. 998 overall.

Ri Se-Gwang of North Korea earned the gold medal in the men’s vault, with Ablyazin taking the silver for Russian Federation and Kenzo Shirai of Japan taking the bronze.
