Super Tuesday: Clinton Takes Commanding Lead

USA presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump controlled the race for the White House with victories across the country on Super Tuesday.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, meanwhile, is projected to win his home state’s primary in Vermont, where he was widely expected to dominate. But Rubio, who won Minnesota’s Republican caucuses, insisted in an interview with CNN that he will move forward and doesn’t believe Trump will win the nomination.

Early in the night, Super Tuesday appeared to be a firewall for both parties’ front-runners, as they made huge gains over their closest rivals.

We’ve now seen 15 states vote in the Democratic contest, and it’s clear that Clinton’s coalition is wider than Sanders’s.

“I know it was a very tough night for Marco Rubio – he had a tough night”, Trump said Tuesday.

There are five races that have not yet been called. Ted Cruz claimed victory in Alaska early Wednesday in caucuses that CNN reported “shattered records” for the state in terms of turnout. His appeal stems from his ability to vocalize the anxieties of voters angry at Washington and anxious about terrorism, immigration, and a slow-growing economy. “Make America great again is going to be much better than making America whole again”. But it also means all three presidential hopefuls are likely to stick around a while longer – continuing to present a fractured front against the man who continues to rack up wins and add to his delegate count.

Trump looked good to claim victory in seven of the 10 states whose polls were reporting at time of press, with Texas senator Ted Cruz claiming victory in two and Rubio picking up Minnesota – his first primary win this election.

Trump then responded directly to Clinton’s attack on his campaign slogan.

But as she tightens her grip on the Democratic race, she has increasingly turned her attention to Mr Trump, who has proposed to build a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico. “If she hasn’t straightened it out by now, she’s not going to straighten it out in the next four years”.

Candidates are trying to win delegates who will vote for them at the parties’ national conventions in July. Clinton also had a lead in MA as of Tuesday night, though that state had not been officially called. Sanders was on track to win at least 286. With a staggering $42 million raised in February alone, Sanders has the campaign cash to do just that – though Clinton is well on her way to the 2,383 delegates needed on the Democratic side.

The Associated Press reports Clinton is now assured of winning at least 334 of the 865 delegates at stake on Super Tuesday. Cruz collected at least 89 and Rubio picked up at least 51. “He’s a lightweight as I’ve said before”. Cruz has 106, Rubio has 67, Kasich has 23 and Carson has eight. On the other hand, Rubio’s strong showing in many states kept alive his momentum to halt Trump’s rise.

Even many Republicans were shocked by the rapid ascendance of Trump, whose views about women, immigrants and Muslims have horrified a wide spectrum of Democrats and Republicans alike.
