Supergirl (1×02) “Stronger Together”

Cat is angry that her city’s superhero is something of a dud. “Every woman worth her salt knows that we have to work twice as hard as a man to be thought of half as good”, Cat tells Kara, who is distraught over an unflattering Supergirl article running in the paper. (Especially the evoked image of Supergirl bobbling a meteor headed for the White House.) Add in Cat holding firm in her “request” that James finagle a sitdown with Supergirl via his “friend in blue”, but for what are truly valid business reasons, and you have in Cat a rich character who could’ve been simply catty. The same can be said of Supergirl as well.

There are still a few bothersome ticks hanging on from last week’s pilot episode.

Supergirl has a dialogue problem and it’s a pretty glaring one. The women show off their respective powers and Supergirl eventually gains the upper hand by using Alex’s earlier advice to use an opponent’s power against them.

Astra and one of her kind, figure out that the humans have a secret weapon in using krypton so now they have to figure out their next move. At work Kara and Cat get into a heavy discussion about about Supergirl’s failed attempts at heroism. It doesn’t take long for the plan to work and the public opinion on Supergirl to change. Kara reminices about memories of her mother telling her about her relationship with Astra and how she didn’t have faith in people.

“Dubbed “#TerribleGirl” by Cat Grant, Kara recruited both Winn and James (who with their “He knows?!” launched a fun bromance) to help her “start small and work her way up”, as Cat unwittingly coached the local hero. Finally, we see Cat riding in a auto, threatening James again about the interview, and he informs the editor to look out her window. And not even a near rom-com pep talk from Jimmy Olsen makes her feel better. His confidence in Supergirl is not there yet, so she doesn’t fit into the equation on this case.

Sound off on the follow-up installment below and go watch Supergirl online via TV Fanatic if you need to catch up. After recognizing her niece’s strength – which she had underestimated – Astra decides she wants to recruit Kara, but Kara is loyal to her adopted home planet, particularly Alex, who is serving as bait. Astra attacks. Kara is surprised to see her aunt. Winn calls Kara to let her know about a fire at the port, where she finds a tanker full of crude oil on the verge of exploding due to the flames. Kara knows all this because she remembers reading up on this species after her mother imprisoned one in Fort Rozz years ago. Astra tells her that twins were rare on her planet. Yeah, Kara definitely isn’t going to agree to that. No. Quick Krypton family tree lesson: Superman’s father Jor-El is brother’s with Kara’s father Zor-El. Instead, she’s a perky everywoman just trying to make it, and make a difference, in the big city.

“Even after this show stops airing I hope that more and more strong females keep coming. I don’t have to do it alone.” stated Kara. It’s because deep down inside no one believed that someone as innocuous as Clark Kent could actually be Superman and this will be no different. Kara’s making it clear that she’s very much looking for a team effort compared to her cousin’s solo approach. Despite this, the show seems to still be hanging around in Superman’s shadow by reminding us that Kara isn’t him. Though, so far, Kara’s are a lot less cumbersome (and involve fewer bad wigs) than what we see on ARROW.

Supergirl rushes over to save her sister, but (of course) it’s a trap!

Just when it looks like Astra is about to pluck Henshaw’s head off his shoulders when he tries to stop her assault on Kara, he pulls out a kryptonite blade and shoves it into her thigh.

Peter Facinelli makes his first appearance as Maxwell Lord. She tells him her cousin Superman only knows how to live as a loner and she doesn’t want that life. The jaw unhinging special effect was surprisingly great though. He said that he wanted to be his own man. Kara told him that part of being your own man is accepting help. Hopefully they’ll soon strike a good balance, or it’s going to be distracting every episode. At least go for #Subpargirl. She was late because they were dealing with an alien called the Hellgrammite. “I’m not programmed to do that”. “I’d ask for a hug”.
