Supergirl Ep#3 Preview – Fight or Flight

Cat Grant ran a beautifully-worded but critical expose on Supergirl after their interview.

Kara’s determined to do what he cousin never could and stop Reactron once and for all, with words if she can and with her fists if she has to.

The main plot deals with the tech-based villain Reactron and his thin-but-buyable motivation to destroy Supergirl in order to hurt Superman, the man he blames for the death of his wife and the accident that made him what he is. A slip of the tongue, because now everyone knows they’re related. The next morning, Kara eats breakfast when her sister comes to see her, and watches her make goo-goo eyes at Jimmy Olsen. After it becomes clear Jimmy knows her secret, Alex goes on to remind Kara that the less people that know the better. Other than Cat questioning the newest superhero’s capacity in saving National City, the trailer also showed tidbits of Reactron and Kara’s junkyard fight scene. Kara is naturally uneasy about this and is tasked with planning a big party for the issue’s release. Team Supergirl takes him on alone, tracking him down in their brand new, charmingly lame lair. Let’s be honest, Kara loves her sticky buns. An alarm goes off about a auto pile-up on the freeway, but it doesn’t concern the DEO.

Could it be that women – including Krypton survivor Kara Zor-El – are intrinsically wired to just get the job done with minimal whining? Scott Lang in Ant-Man has a learning curve because he’s just gotten the shrinking suit. And he served as a damsel in distress for Kara to save from Reactron, who needed Lord’s technical expertise to fix his damaged suit. She was blind for awhile (but cured by Bizarro), and she developed superpowers and a secret identity of her own for a bit, too. James, knowing how Superman struggled to fight Reactron in Metropolis, called him in for help. It’s aggravating when Kara’s step-sister explains to Kara that she should be satisfied with her “good” life because of two reasons: she has a good job as a secretary and is also good looking.

Luckily, Cat has enough redeeming qualities in the form of her hilariously on point need to be well-caffeinated to be productive and imagined distractions when trying to write her exposé on Supergirl that she’s not the villain of this story. But Winn is of many talents. When Kara and James start dancing together you forget that there are heroes or villains or anything else on this show.

This is definitely one series that you don’t want to miss.

– “Hello. I’m looking for someone with a background in nuclear fission”. Lord allows himself to be taken rather than one of his scientist. After hearing about the attack, Kara flies to the lab where the doctor confirms Reactron took Lord. Supergirl won’t be her own hero so long as she can always call on her famous cousin to bail her out of tough situations.

In the junk yard, Kroll tasks Lord with fixing his suit which he agrees to do in exchange for a Dr Pepper (not an ad, nor a joke).

Maxwell Lord is working on a train for National City. Surprisingly, the first book I could find was Action Comics #426 from 1973, thirty-five years after Superman’s 1938 debut in Action Comics #1. Cat has more presisng questions: Why did she wait so long to come out? Lucky for Kara, her cousin shows up and scares off the trouble maker. In all fairness to James, it does look like Kara’s seriously losing when Superman comes to her rescue.

– Are we buying Jimmy’s explanation about calling Superman for himself, not for her? Kara enters the soiree and is immediately chastised by Cat. In Supergirl, there are two, including British actor David Harewood as Hank Henshaw. A woman can be powerful, and enjoy being powerful – but only if no one, including herself, expects her to be. He requests Superman’s help in dealing with Reactron in a misguided attempt to protect Kara, a person he’s come to care about deeply.

Thanks to a few clever detective work from Winn, Kara finds Reactron’s hideout. She’s hardly impervious to harm or Kryptonite, as she is yet to attain mastery of her abilities, which she has suppressed during her 12 years on Earth. Kara wanted to talk things out with Krull, not just beat him up. Lucy didn’t like the way they left things and she suggests dinner.

First off, there’s Kara’s closeness with her human older sister, Alex, which was again highlighted in “Fight or Flight”. But the show continues to do good things in the physicality side of it all as Kara and Reactron go head to head in trading blows and powers with Kara taking a few real hits. The next morning, Kara enters Jimmy’s office, only to find he’s not alone. Kara’s eager to celebrate this victory with James, only he has a visitor: Lucy Lane (Jenna Dewan Tatum) – of that family of Lanes. That’s why she’s super.

There was definitely tension between Cat and Maxwell when they danced at the party.
