Wednesday is global Denim Day, an observance when everyone is asked to wear jeans to show their support for victims of sexual assault.
Believing women when they report a sexual assault is half the battle, advocates say, and 60 percent of sexual assaults are not reported.
The teenager said that the instructor drove her out to an isolated road and wrestled one of her legs out of her jeans as he raped her. Coordinators will be standing outside the Student Center passing out pins and raising awareness through interactive games and denim that students can sign in support of sexual assault victims.
“For the second consecutive year, the City of Atlanta Law Department is proud to lead participation in the worldwide Denim Day campaign”, said City Attorney Cathy Hampton.
As part of the California Association Against Sexual Association’s “No More” campaign, proceeds from “No More” license plates will help domestic violence and rape crisis centers across the state See http://www.nomoreplate.org for details. This event began in April 1999 after a sexual assault case in Italy ended with the accused being released.
The idea stems from from a 1990 Italian Supreme Court case. “This is why it is essential to involve all members of our community to end sexual violence”, says Barrett.
Opening up about sexual assault and discussing the facts of it with one another – and our children – is hard, but it will go a long way toward reforming the stereotypes and harmful attitudes that breed a society’s acceptance of sexual assault.
In addition, the office is participating in Denim Day at the Statehouse, along with other community partners, from noon to 1 p.m.
“I hope that it gains momentum”, Avila said.

The Millheim event is just the latest of several that have taken place in Centre County for weeks as various communities and organizations observed Sexual Assault Awareness Month throughout April. They provide victims of sexual assault with crisis line availability, support groups, scheduled appointments, legal advocacy, hospital appointments and assistance with state compensation claims, as well as temporary housing and financial aid if needed. And of course, wearing your denim on April 27 in solidarity with survivors.
