Supreme Court Bans Registration of Diesel Cars Over 2000cc in Delhi
In a radical move to combat against pollution in New Delhi, India’s Supreme Court has ordered a temporary ban on the sale of large diesel cars in Delhi and the surrounding region.

In another landmark ruling, the court also raised by 100% the Green cess being levied on commercial vehicles entering Delhi.
The top court also ruled that all trucks not bound for Delhi will not be allowed to enter the capital through National Highways 1 and 8.
All taxis have also been ordered to convert to CNG by March 31.
The Supreme Court has said that diesel cars are sending out toxic fumes, and therefore, it was being forced to impose a ban on registration of 2000 cc and over vehicles.
Pollution levels in Delhi are at an all time high and several steps are being taken to improve the situation. On Wednesday, the court unveiled a slew of measures to curb the alarming rise in pollution levels in the city.

It directed the state government and municipal bodies not to burn waste and dispose of these in a scientific manner. “Why do you let the opportunity go?” it said.
All diesel engines used by Mercedes-Benz on their cars in India are above the 2-litre engine capacity that has been banned. For a day 1,400 diesel vehicles gets registered and 30 pct of these being strapped with engines of 2000 cc and above.
The plan also proposed a re-constitution of Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) committee which represents the experts and stakeholders from Centre and Delhi government.
Delhi’s air routinely worsens in the winter as the poor start lighting fires to stay warm and as cooler air and clouds trap pollutants.
The decision from the Supreme Court to ban the registrations of new cars came after days when the Delhi Government has come up with odd-even formula.

Senior advocate Pinaki Misra, appearing for Delhi based auto dealers, said that the tribunal has passed a “harsh” direction by ordering that there would be no registration of new diesel vehicles.
