“Today’s Supreme Court ruling is welcome news to the millions of Americans who now wager $150 billion illegally each year through off-shore, black market bookies”, Robins said. That’s the approach favored by sports leagues like the National Basketball Association, which sought to block New Jersey’s efforts not because it is opposed to sports gambling, but because it prefers a federal regulatory scheme to a patchwork of various state laws.

In recent years, New Jersey has been pushing for the ability to allow sports gambling, which would allow Atlantic City casinos to offer something Las Vegas casinos have had for years. The move likely opens the gates for more of states around the country to get into the sports betting business including Florida.

America has seen a cultural shift on the question of sports gambling. Chris Christie, R-N.J., said on the Supreme Court steps, “If we’re successful here, we can have bets being taken in New Jersey within two weeks of a decision by the court”.

The negates federal restrictions on sports wagering outside of Nevada, in a decision on New Jersey’s suit against the NCAA.

The Court’s ruling opens up the possibilities that other state with casino gaming, such as MS and Louisiana, might soon open Vegas-style sports book.

“More than anyone else, Dennis had the vision and determination to invest the time, energy, and resources that led to today’s decision, which will ensure the security of the Garden State’s billion-dollar equine industry”, Riccio said. He said Monday’s ruling has set the stage for a state-by-state approach that will “place a huge onus on the leagues (and perhaps also universities)” to implement regulations while also pursuing legislative solutions at the state and federal level. Fantasy sports leagues amount to “thinly veiled gambling”, as ESPN’s Rob King told Berliner, and have helped push sports betting into the mainstream.

Pennsylvania lawmakers are ahead of many other states, having already passed their own sports betting laws previous year in expectation of this ruling. Essentially, it gives each state the power to make its own decision about sports betting.

Many states have hoped their cut of legalized sports gambling could help solve budget problems. Sports betting as we know it is about to change is a major, positive way. It is now up to the states to decide for themselves on the issue, in the same way they choose whether to offer lotteries and other forms of gambling. It argued taking its laws off the books was different from authorizing sports gambling.
