Supreme Court to Consider NEET Exemption for MBBS, BDS Courses on Tuesday

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear tomorrow a fresh plea of few states, including Jammu and Kashmir and some private medical colleges, that they be allowed to conduct their pre-scheduled test for admissions in MBBS and BDS courses. The apex court on April 28 upheld that single common entrance test for admission to MBBS and BDS courses for 2016-17 academic year.

The Supreme Court on Saturday quashed a petition filed by students appealing the court’s order for the National Eligibility Entrance Test to be held this year. Centre has said that the order that the apex court had passed on Thursday, indicating the two-phase NEET to be held on May 1 and July 14 this year, is quite hard to implement and needs some changes.

According to the schedules announced by the examination in the two states, MHT CET 2016 will be held on May 05 and KCET 2016 on May 04 and 05. “The intent of ensuring transparency (through NEET) is good, bu we don’t yet know what ramifications it will have on the interests of students”, the minister said, adding that the government would spell out its stand on NEET as soon as it fully understands its implications.

The court did not entertain the plea seeking modification of its earlier order.

Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), that conducts the annual Goa Common Entrance Exams (GCET) for admissions to various professional degree courses, has stated that nothing stops these students from appearing for the State-level entrance tests too.

All eyes were focused towards the Supreme Court today, as the Apex Court sat to decide the fate of National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test this year. If NEET is indeed imposed then, it will take under its wing all the medical colleges and institutes in the country.

“The ban on long sleeves and veils was introduced a year ago and was upheld by the Supreme Court”. In many states, Medical Entrance examinations have already been conducted.

Appearing for one of the parties seeking to be heard, senior counsel Rajeev Dhavan said: “I can’t say that the dissenting judge was pushing his case” and the recall of does not mean that it has been set aside.
