Officials say Cook was in critical condition because of his lost leg, but he never lost consciousness.

Enright said another surfer was with the man and helped him back to shore after the attack. He told KHON-TV it’s heart-breaking that doctors had to amputate above the knee, but that Cook is in good spirits.

Cook’s relatives said that he was waiting for a wave while sitting on his surfboard when he noticed a school of fish jump out of the water. Cook’s left hand was also injured. According to CNN, the first report of the shark attack came at around 10:25 a.m., local time when a call was made to 911 requesting emergency assistance. The shark was reported to be between 10- and 12-feet long. He was taken to a Honolulu hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Best wishes to Colin, and we’re all hoping for a quick recovery.

Lifeguards are patrolling the waters, warning people of the incident and advising them not to go into the water.

Authorities have not managed to find the actual species of shark that attacked Colin. The incident is the fifth shark attack in the state this year. One attack, which occurred in April on Maui, was fatal.
