Surfer rescues girls from Lake Michigan off Grand Haven; 1 wasn’t breathing
Two teenaged girls were rescued from the choppy waters of Lake Michigan off of Grand Haven State Park on Thursday afternoon by a surfer. While in the water both girls got pulled further away from the shore as the current was becoming stronger. Surfers and emergency personnel pulled them from Lake Michigan after bystanders on the beach saw them struggling in the water.

Boeskool is credited with saving the 13 year old girl’s life.
“I carried her about waist deep, and then another guy helped me because I was falling fast… after holding her up in the water and swimming back”, he said. He tells the Grand Haven Tribune (http://bit.ly/1Lo4pXq ) that her condition improved to stable by Thursday evening.
“Two little girls just came into my head immediately”, Boeskool recalled.
Zeb Boeskool sprung into action after the girls were spotted approximately 800 feet out from the pier earlier today in Grand Haven, about 15 miles from Muskegon. The unnamed girls were taken to North Ottawa Community Hospital for treatment, with one of them in serious condition after needing to be resuscitated.
She was not breathing and had to be revived.
The 14-year-old girl was also hospitalized for observation but was later released, officials said.
Signs reading “DANGEROUS – Rip current, Swimming not advised’ were posted at the beach on Thursday”.
According to the National Weather Service, rip currents are one of the hazards for beaches on the Great Lakes.
