Surprise Kanye West performance ends in fans’ disappointment

The rapper booked the last-minute show as a makeup for Governors Ball, which cancelled its day-three line-up due to inclement weather. His surprise Hot 97 Summer Jam appearance was followed by cryptic tweets of a to-be-announced venue. West had been set to perform songs from his seventh studio album, “The Life of Pablo”, at the festival. Photos circulated online in the 2 a.m. hour show him standing up through the sunroof of a auto outside the venue.

After streets were blocked off and it became clear that there were way more fans than Webster Hall could handle, Kanye called New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to get a permit for a block party. Even as the show was canceled, fans refused to budge, with officers yelling to the massive crowd, “please go home”. Someone on Twitter wrote “It’s pandemonium”.

Dozens of people were also seen climbing atop of vehicles – several of which were dented and at least one was left with a broken windshield. Forty-five minutes later, Webster Hall, which never directly acknowledged the concert, said there “is no late show tonight”. When a message by Webster Hall was tweeted that there’s no concert, that’s when witnesses say the crowd of thousands – flowing out into the street – got out of control.

“A mob of people were rushing the doors and jumping on cars”, Danielle Jones, a New York University student told the Daily News.

Police made one arrest for disorderly conduct while dispersing the crowd.
