Surrey bowler Curran added to England Performance Programme

Cricketing sensations Tom and Sam Curran further outlined their potential by ripping apart Northamptonshire single-handedly.

At The Oval, Surrey set Northants a first innings target of 410 – but they fell 300 runs short thanks in no small part to the Curran brothers and were forced to follow on.

Rossington posted his first ton of the season off 88 balls in the over after lunch but Murphy should have gone soon after when he nibbled one from Tom Curran into the cordon where Roy downed a regulation chance at second slip.

Tom and Sam Curran’s feat broke a 65-year old in County Cricket. Bernard and Nicolaas Scholtz recently achieved this feat, in 2011, for Namibia when they bowled out Kwa-Zulu-Natal. Tom Curran struck again with the third ball of Northamptonshire’s second innings, but Ben Duckett (116 not out) and Alex Wakely (93no) helped the visitors recover to 223 for one by the close of day three to ensure the champagne remains on ice for title-chasing leaders Surrey.

Sam Curran, 17, has been included in the England U-19 squad for a triangular series in Sri Lanka ahead of next year’s U-19 World Cup in Bangladesh. He earned the honour of becoming the youngest player to take five wickets on County Championship debut.

Tom picked up 7/35 while Sam managed figures of 3/46 as Northamptonshire were bowled out for 110. Surrey director of cricket, Alec Stewart spoke highly of the brothers.”The two Currans were quite outstanding”, he said. He’s just 20 but he’s done a man’s job.

And the pair are tipped for big things after enjoying a breakthrough season at Surrey which has seen the side promoted back to the top division of the county championship.

The achievements of the brothers surpassed the efforts made by Kumar Sangakkara, who scored his third century of the month in Surrey’s first innings.

On the attack Tom Curran's 7-35 was chiefly responsible for Northants being skittled for 110 in the first innings at The Oval
