Survey Finds Poverty, Income Numbers Remain Unchanged

An Oregon Health & Science University study funded by the state found last fall that the insured rate had dropped to 5 percent points -about half what the census showed.

The percentage of Californians without health insurance dropped by almost 27 percent between 2013 and 2014, according to survey data the U.S. Census Bureau released Wednesday.

And while the number of uninsured Texans dropped by 700,000, the Lone Star State still has a long way to go.

A related census report showed significant gains in another indicator of economic well-being, with the number of Americans lacking health insurance declining by 8.8 million to 33 million people.

Overall poverty in region was 16.5 percent, close to the state and national average.

“What they are missing is the fact that nearly all of that increase (in coverage) was because of Medicaid expansion, and was principally in those states (that expanded Medicaid)”, he said. However, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention appear to show a steady decline in the number of Americans without health insurance from 2010 to 2014, thanks to Obamacare coverage programs and the improving economy.

Household income and health insurance coverage are both going up in the Charlotte area, but the poverty rate is holding steady. “The largest percentage-point change in coverage was for direct-purchase, which increased by 3.2 percentage points to cover 14.6% of people for some or all of 2014 (up from 11.4% in 2013)”. Those numbers reflect the state roll-out of the health insurance marketplace under the Affordable Care Act.

Officials attribute the decrease in Florida and around the country to passage of the Affordable Care Act, which expanded health insurance to millions of Americans.

Texas had an uninsured rate of 19.1 percent in 2014, down from 22.1 percent the year prior.

According into the Census Bureau, there have been 46.five lot of those in adversity past years and to discover the lower income rate was also 14.8%. That’s according to an analysis of new U.S. Census Bureau numbers by the Louisiana Budget Project, a Baton Rouge-based organization that provides independent research and analysis of Louisiana fiscal issues and their impact on low- and moderate-income residents.

The federal government’s poverty threshold, which for 2014 was $24,008 for a family of four, “doesn’t address the high costs” on Long Island, she said.
