Sushma Swaraj Arrives in Maldives

She will maintain talks with Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen tomorrow morning following which she is going to co-chair the India-Maldives Joint Commission talks final held in 2000.

Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj arrived in the Maldives on a visit expected to revive ties after years of cooler relations during which China asserted its influence. Swaraj was received by her Maldivian counterpart Dunya Maumoon at the Ibrahim Nasir worldwide Airport.

An explosion took place on a speed boat carrying Maldivian President Yameen, his wife and other presidential staff as it was approaching the main jetty in the capital of Male on September 28.

Swarup said the two sides would also discuss very close cooperation between India and Maldives on defence and security ties.

He added that the Joint Commission is an important mechanism to evaluation the multi-faceted relationship. Her remarks are significant as reports have suggested increased Islamist terror activity in the country even as over 100 people are said to have joined the war in Iraq and Syria.
