The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office says Cpl. Kimber Gist is doing remarkably well and is in good spirits following surgery.
According to a statement from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Gist has been with the agency for about two and a half years and has worked in patrol for one year. She was wearing body armor when she was shot.
A Berkeley County Sheriff’s Deputy is recovering after being shot early Friday morning.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, North Charleston Police Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are all assisting in the investigation. Shortly after the attempted arrest took place, there was a scuffle and officials lost contact with the deputy while at the scene. She is now being treated at a nearby hospital.
Cochran did not say on what charges the suspect was being arrested, or what led to the initial traffic stop. Police say it was apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Pryor says North Charleston officers were told the suspect was headed their way. “But we’re strong. We’ve got a lot of community support and a lot of people are praying for us”.
The deputy’s name has not yet been released.
Officers were tipped off that the suspect appeared to be heading from Goose Creek to North Charleston, Pryor said.
Three other people who had been inside the house, which is south of Park Circle near Rivers Avenue, escaped unharmed, authorities said.
A female Berkley County sheriff’s deputy was shot just after stepping out of her vehicle early Friday in Goose Creek. Chief Deputy Cochran told News 2 that the deputy was struggling with the suspect approximately 13 minutes after the call was made.
Hostage negotiators spent more than two hours talking with Smith in an attempt to convince him to surrender, said Spencer Pryor, a spokesman for the North Charleston Police Department.
The man suspected of wounding Rogers was later shot and killed by police in Charleston when he emerged from an apartment shooting at officers.
