Lewis used a.40-caliber handgun to shoot Melton, but was not carrying the gun when captured by police without resistance shortly after the Melton shooting, Gorman said. Checks may be made payable to the Captain Robert Melton Memorial Fund.

Authorities allege Lewis shot and killed Kansas City, Kan., police Capt. Robert Melton on Tuesday as 46-year-old Melton was still in his unmarked patrol vehicle, helping investigate an earlier drive-by shooting. Lewis also faces charges of aggravated assault and criminal discharge of a weapon from an incident earlier Tuesday.
Lewis and Sipple, both from Kansas City, Kansas, have been in custody since Tuesday.
It’s unclear if the men have lawyers yet. His bond was set at $10 million, the Star reports.
Jamaal Lewis wore an anti-suicide prison smock during his initial Wyandotte County court appearance Friday on charges of capital murder, aggravated assault and criminal discharge of a weapon.
“I spoke with various members of the family today and what I told them was is we still have more investigation to do, number one”, Gorman said.
Melton left behind three children, and his partner is expecting a another child this winter, police said. “He guided us through this tough time of being law enforcement in the United States”.

Police Chief Terry Zeigler struggled to make it through his tribute to Melton, who he said was committed to the force.
