Hackett Police Chief Darrell Spells, who was also shot at by Jones, was grazed in the forehead and was released from the hospital, Hollenbeck said.

CBS affiliate 5NEWS reports both officers were taken to a hospital in Fort Smith.

We regret to report that Sebastian County Corporal Deputy Bill Cooper was taken off life support and died shortly afterwards. Hackett Police Chief Darrell Spells suffered superficial wounds and is expected to recover.

The shooting happened before 7:20 a.m. outside a residence in the 4700 block of Arkansas 253, which is between Greenwood and Midland.

Law enforcement have surrounded the home and the SWAT team was on scene.

Sebastian County Sheriff Bill Hollenbeck said Wednesday that 34-year-old Billy Monroe Jones had pointed a weapon at his father, who called 911.

“He was a ideal example of how we all want our law enforcement officers to be when it comes to relationships with our community”, Hollenbeck said.

An Arkansas sheriff says a man suspected of shooting and killing a deputy had wanted to cause a “ruckus” ahead of a court appearance.

A news conference on Wednesday afternoon provided details of a morning shooting incident that left one law enforcement officer dead and another injured in western Arkansas. He was described as having negative feelings towards law enforcement. “Thousands of times a day we do it right, but over the last several years it appears we focus on those incidents where we mess up”. I join with all Arkansans as we mourn the passing of this selfless servant and keep his family and loved ones and all of the law enforcement community in our thoughts and prayers.
