Antigo Police Chief Eric Roller said, “At this point, we feel that we have the subject in custody that was a threat”. A police officer who had been patrolling the school parking lot shot Wagner, the statement said.

The two victims and the suspect were treated at Aspirus Langlade Hospital. A female student has been released from the hospital, police said, and a male student was undergoing surgery on Sunday morning.

Gov. Scott Walker and others have praised the police response, saying officers’ actions likely saved lives.

A search warrant is being conducted by police at Wagner’s residence in attempt to seek more information about the incident.

The relationship between the shooter and the victims was not immediately clear as of early Sunday morning, according to Roller. Wagner was raised by his mother and grandparents, he said. According CBS affiliate WSAW-TV, Wagner graduated from Antigo High School previous year. “Then they flipped the lights and then about 12 officers came in and are armored”.

“In a small town like this you never imagine that something like that’s going to happen”, says Igl who knew several students attending prom Saturday night.

Two students were shot as they left the school.

“All the people within the prom were eventually escorted from the school and are safe”, Roller said. Officers working the prom reportedly heard the gunshots and intervened.

Authorities said the two students and the attacker were taken to a hospital and that investigators don’t believe there is a further threat to the community. It is located about 85 miles northwest of Green Bay and 150 miles north of Milwaukee.

A training partnership between Antigo schools and local police allowed a “well-rehearsed response” to Saturday night’s prom shooting.
