Authorities say the shooting happened Saturday evening when they got a call about a man with a gun on the side of USA 287. She was not injured.
Deputy Teri Javes, who began her career with the sheriff’s office in 1997 as a civilian technician in the jail, shot the man when she responded to a call from motorists who reported he was armed, walking beside 287 and apparently signaling to passing traffic that he wanted a fight.
The suspect in a shootout along USA 287 east of Niwot with a Boulder County deputy is now under investigation for attempted murder but remains in “critical, grave condition”. The callers told dispatch they noticed he had a gun tucked into the waist band of his trousers.
Shaffer is under investigation for attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer and other charges. Javes was not hit, but her patrol vehicle was shot twice.
Javes was placed on paid administrative leave following Saturday’s shooting. The deputy returned fire, hitting Shaffer twice. Police say it happened near Highway 287 and Oxford Road, south of Longmont. His criminal history shows he crashed through a Lafayette mobile home park in 2010 and pleaded guilty to felony menacing in Coulder Co. from a 2004 incident.
