Suspected Kentucky Trooper Killer Shot Dead

The slain trooper was identified as 31-year-old Joseph Cameron Ponder, the Kentucky State Police said. The birthday listed on the account matches Johnson-Shanks’. Troopers opened fire, ultimately killing Johnson-Shanks.

At that point, according to the statement, the suspect’s auto abruptly stopped, causing Ponder to crash his auto into the vehicle. He was taken to the hospital in Princeton where he died at 8:23 a.m.

Johnson-Shanks was found early on Monday hiding in a wooded area. Upon making contact with Johnson-Shanks, Troopers of the Special Response Team (SRT) saw he had a firearm and instructed him to drop it. According to Nexis, this individual pled guilty in St. Louis in November 2007 to burglary in the second degree, a class C felony. He served in Hawaii for a period of time. She was a passenger in the vehicle and a niece to Joseph Thomas Johnston-Shanks.
