Suspected militants attack Indian army base in Kashmir

There was no information on any causalities and exchange of fire between soldiers and the militants was ongoing, the officer said.

Militants attacked an Army’s brigade headquarters in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri town on Sunday morning.

Uri, a town west of Indian-controlled Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar, houses the Indian army’s brigade headquarters in the region along the de facto border. An intense gun battle is underway at the site and the militants are holed up inside the headquarters.

At least 87 civilians have been killed and thousands injured in the deadly protests and clashes, the worst violence to hit the region since 2010.

The injured soldiers have been rushed to an army base hospital in Srinagar.

According to preliminary reports the attack took place around 5.20 am.

Indian army sources said between four and six “fidayeen” – or commando-style gunmen willing to fight to the death – were believed to have penetrated the brigade headquarters in Uri near the Line of Control with Pakistan.

Official sources told PTI that Special forces jawans of Army are being airdropped at the sight of the encounter.

He also spoke with the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir while taking stock of the situation.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh who was scheduled to fly to Russian Federation and the U.S. has postponed his visit due to Kashmir unrest.

The entire area has been sealed off.
