Burguan said the attack unfolded at about 1900 GMT (10pm) at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, about 60 miles (100 km) east of Los Angeles.

While police are still piecing together what triggered today’s mass shooting in San Bernardino, there are early reports the deadly incident was triggered by a fight at a Christmas party.

Lavinia Johnson, executive director of the facility, told CNN the suspects opened fire inside a conference building in the complex where a holiday party was being held for county health department personnel. At one point, he says: “Try to relax, try to relax”.

“Burguan says the suspects were wearing “assault-style clothing” and were both armed with assault rifles and handguns”. Officials don’t think that person had anything to do with the shooting.

Seventeen people were wounded, according to authorities.

Authorities are expected to provide their next update Thursday morning.

Shorty afterward, gunfire erupted at the Inland Regional Center where the employees filled a conference room.

Investigators began processing the scene of the shootings late Wednesday after disposing of three explosive devices at the centre.

They left the baby with Farook’s mother in nearby Redlands on Wednesday.

The pursuit led back to San Bernardino where the two suspects were killed in a shoot-out with police.

One police officer was injured, but his injuries are not life threatening.

Another individual, who may be a third suspect, was detained by police after being caught running from the scene of the shoot-out.

No motive has been identified yet.

The official, who was briefed on the case, was not authorized to speak to the media about the ongoing investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

“At last count, I’ve been told we had 20 or 21 officers that were involved in that gun battle with the suspects”, Burguan said. “We have not ruled out terrorism, ” he said. “It’s possible it goes down that road. We stand in mourning, in sadness, for what happened”.

Davis says California requires paperwork when guns change hands privately but many other states don’t.

Burguan said earlier, “Obviously, at a minimum, we have a domestic-type, terrorist-type situation that occurred here”. She said the extent of the anticipated patients’ injuries is not clear.
