Police Chief Hank Stawinski says the shooter opened fire on the first officer he saw outside the station Sunday afternoon.
The police chief said he could offer no explanation for what might have precipitated the attack on the District 3 police station, which lies adjacent to county police headquarters in Landover, Maryland, about 8 miles (13 km) east of Washington.
Fraternal Order of Police President John Teletchea described the attack as “unwarranted, unprovoked, unprecedented and unacceptable”. No information was immediately released about the second brother.
Two Temple Hills men have been identified in connection with the shooting death of Prince George’s County Officer Jacai Colson. Immediately following the shooting the police warned residents near the station to stay inside and others to avoid the area entirely as there was an “active shooter” situation in progress. He says police took the wounded officer to the same hospital.
All three suspects will be charged with second degree murder, six counts of attempted first degree murder, nine counts of use of a handgun in the commission of a felony and additional charges.
Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks called the shooting an “act of cowardice” and a “horrific act of evil” and promised an aggressive prosecution.
NEW YORK (AP) – Police divers late Sunday stopped searching inside a sunken tugboat for the body of a third crew member who went missing after the boat crashed into a barge on the Hudson River north of New York City.
This attack comes 15 days after Prince William County Police Officer Ashley Guindon was shot and killed in a domestic-related shooting. “They bravely advanced and engaged this individual”, the chief said.
Colson, he said, “reacted to protect his fellow police officers and his community”. Alan Doubleday, assistant chief of the Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Services Department reported that the civilian was in stable condition. Officers crowded into the hospital’s lobby waiting for news.
He said he wasn’t surprised when he learned he had become a police officer.
One suspect was wounded during the altercation and was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Prince George’s Hospital Center.
Reacting to the shooting and news of the injuring of one of the suspects, Erica Thomas, the aunt of Malik and Michael Ford told the washingtonpost: ‘What we wanna know is why did all of this happen?
