Miss Carey was on her first backpacking trip and planned to cross America before heading to Europe, her family said. She was shot to death, police said.

Doug Pittman discusses the arrest of suspects in the murder of hiker Steve Carter.

After months of keeping away from the church – known for providing food, showers, mail service and respite for Portland’s homeless community – the 23-year-old also known as Haze had shown up with two associates in a 2003 Volkswagen they had parked out front on Southeast 11th Avenue. After the suspects were arrested Wednesday, two inspectors from the San Francisco Police Homicide unit flew to Portland. The agencies started working together.

Now, the three suspects are connected to Carey’s death.

Mark Reano, owner of Greenbridge Gas & Auto in Point Reyes, said authorities came to the station early Wednesday for the video.

Investigators also obtained images of the three suspects from other sources, including surveillance cameras at a Fairfax 7-Eleven and a photo a citizen took of a man he deemed suspicious.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday said detectives had recovered the weapon used to kill Carter. They swooped in and arrested the three suspects outside a dining hall.

Carter’s dog is expected to make a full recovery.

Morrison Haze Lampley, 23, Sean Michael Angold, 24, and Lila Scott Alligood, 18, will be arraigned on Friday over her murder. Portland police officers, a few undercover and a few in tactical gear, gathered at the church while the three ate lunch Wednesday, arresting them as they exited.

Late Thursday, San Francisco police reported that the trio will also be charged with murder in the death of Audrey Carey, 23, who was found beaten and shot in Golden Gate Park last Sunday.

Marin sheriff’s investigators were continuing to look for additional evidence and witnesses as they prepared their case for the Marin County District Attorney’s Office.

“It has been a very traumatic season for us with Lokita’s cancer, then the Valley Fire that destroyed our beloved Harbin Hot Springs”, Rose said.

Marin County sheriff’s Capt. Dave Augustus described the three suspects as drifters and said a motive was unknown. They were staying with friends when Carter was killed, Pittman said. He and his wife retired to Costa Rica but returned to Marin County this year when she was diagnosed with cancer and began receiving treatment locally.

The Carters launched the Ecstatic Living Institute in rural Middletown, California, about 16 years ago to teach tantra to couples around the world.
