Commissioner Richard Ross said 25-year-old Nicholas Glenn “was hell-bent on hurting a lot of people”. Ross said the envelope was titled “Doomed”. As they passed by the officer, police say he detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the group. One Philadelphia Police Department office and one University of Pennsylvania police officer were shot Friday night by “an individual driven by hatred”, according to Philadelphia Police Department public information office John Stanford.
“Last night, Philadelphia Police Officers were faced yet again with another round of gunfire nearly exactly 24 hours after a Sergeant was ambushed and shot, a University of Pennsylvania police officer was shot, several citizens were shot, one of which was killed by a lone gunman”, the police department said in a statement.
The shooting occurred around 11:20 p.m. Friday when Glenn approached a police auto and fired through the window at Sgt. Sylvia Young, who was sitting in her cruiser at 52nd and Sansom Streets in west Philadelphia, police said.
Glenn was “clearly trying to assassinate her”, said Ross, noting Glenn fired at close range 18 times. Ross said, “This is a completely freakish situation”. Young was struck up to eight times.
Police say Glenn went on to the Maximum Level Lounge nightclub, shooting a security guard and even using a woman as a human shield before eventually shooting her in the leg. Another man was shot ten times and three women were injured outside a nightclub in Port Richmond.
Ross said Miller and two police officers chased the man into an alley, where he was shot and killed.
Both Miller, 56, and Young, 46, were in stable condition Saturday at Penn Presbyterian Hospital, as were the three other people hit by gunfire.
Officials say two police officers have been shot after a confrontation in West Philadelphia. The gunman in that case reportedly told investigators that he was “following Allah”.
Seconds after she was shot, Young was heard on the police radio screaming, “I’m at the McDonald’s on 51st Street”.
“It is absolutely miraculous that she is alive”, Ross said.
A rampage that ends with one women dead and five injured, two of which are police officers.
Mayor Jim Kenney praised officers and pleaded with them to follow Young’s example and wear their protective vests.
