The scavengers had at first pulled it apart, “assuming it was of value” but when they found wires attached to it they left it under the train tracks and informed police, he said.

The pipe bomb exploded Saturday in Seaside Park, New Jersey, before a charity 5K race to benefit Marines and sailors.

Later that night, a bomb in a pressure cooker exploded in Chelsea, injuring 29. Following an explosion at 12:30 a.m., Mayor Bollwage said one of five devices found inside exploded as it was being disarmed by a robot. No injuries were reported. While one of the police robots attempted to disarm one device, it triggered an explosion.

In a statement, New Jersey Transit said that all service along the Northeast Corridor and New Jersey Coast lines had been suspended in both directions until further notice.

Mayor Bollwage told CNN that there was not a “cell phone or detonation device” on the package.

The incident came after the United States was shaken by three attacks at the weekend, including a Saturday night bombing that injured 29 in Manhattan and a stabbing incident at a Minnesota shopping mall that wounded nine.

An Afghanistan-born American sought in connection with a bombing that wounded more than two dozen people in New York City and could be linked to other bombs found in New York and New Jersey was taken into custody on Monday after a shootout, a New Jersey mayor said.

The device is understood to have been found in a bin at the station.

The backpack had up to five devices, Elizabeth’s mayor Chris Bollwage said. During that investigation, the bomb detonated while law enforcement officials were working to secure it with a robot, according to the FBI, however no one was injured.

A series of attacks rocked NY city last weekend with police officials discovering that both the bombs were “pressure cooker with Christmas ferry lights”.

There was a suspicious package with multiple improvised explosive devices this evening at the Elizabeth Train Station in NJ.

Late on Saturday, a powerful explosion rocked Manhattan’s popular Chelsea neighborhood when a pressure-cooker bomb packed with shrapnel detonated. The owners of the restaurant were recently involved in a lawsuit with the Elizabeth regarding its hours of operation, Bollwage said.

Police in Union County, New Jersey, declined to comment. Amtrak said 2,400 passengers were affected and trains were being brought in to other stations for people to get other transportation.

Two officers were shot, one in the hand and the other in a bullet-proof vest, during the incident, he said.
