Timothy Brosnan, 57, was taken into custody at the scene of the fire at 11 Linden Ave., according to Swampscott Police Lieutenant Joe Kable.
Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at the home at about 5:45 p.m, Fire Chief Kevin Breen said.
No additional information was immediately available.
Black smoke could be seen billowing above the neighborhood adjacent to the Tedesco Country Club’s golf course Saturday evening.
“He was staring into the house that was on fire and said, ‘Isn’t it the most handsome thing, ‘” the police report said. “I saw flames inside”.
Brosnan was a licensed construction supervisor in Mass- achusetts until that license expired in April, according to Executive Office of Public Safety and Security records.
Timothy and Mary Brosnan are listed as the owners of the 7,200-square-foot house.
“We don’t know exactly what he did”, Breen said.
Several neighbors reported hearing an explosion. “First arriving companies found extremely heavy fire conditions coming out of the garage doors and coming out of the left side of the house”. “We went straight to a defensive attack and kept everyone out of the building until the fire was under control and all the utilities were turned off”, he said.
Officials said Brosnan was the only one home when the fire broke out, and he was outside the residence waiting for fire crews to arrive.
Fire crews from Lynn, Marblehead, Nahant, Revere, and Salem provided assistance.
“Everybody did a great job”, Greenbaum said.
