Swamy produces Documents to claim Rahul Gandhi as UK National

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi claiming that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi claimed himself a British citizen while floating a private company in London and demanded that the government should strip his Indian citizenship and as a member of Lok Sabha. “The allegation by Dr. Swamy is entirely false”, party’s chief spokesman Randeep Surjewala said in a strongly-worded statement.

According to various media reports, Swamy said that since India doesn’t allow the citizenship of two countries, his Indian citizenship should be cancelled.

In his letter, Dr Swamy has said that Gandhi, who is now a Lok Sabha MP, is also the Director and Secretary of a company called BACKOPS LIMITED in the United Kingdom.

While distributing copies of documents extracted purportedly from the company law authorities of Britain, he told mediapersons here that Rahul Gandhi had declared himself as a British national in the documents related to a now-dissolved company.

NDTV journalist Sreenivasan Jain posted documents on Twitter that showed that in the incorporation documents for Backops, accessed through Companies House, UK, Gandhi’s nationality has indeed been shown as Indian, but in subsequent returns that were filed, his nationality has indeed been declared as British.

“As per article 9 of Indian constitution, any Indian citizen can not acquire dual citizenship”, Swamy said.

“The Congress claims Mr Swamy’s allegations reflect their frustration at the Bihar defeat and the “internal revolt” brewing in its senior leadership”.
