Swansea boss Garry Monk plays down Chelsea form

When Bafetimbi Gomis was laid low with a hamstring problem towards the back end of last season, the lack of depth in Monk’s squad was highlighted.

“You hope boards aren’t trigger-happy, but unfortunately these days they can be”.

“Let’s not beat about the bush – that’s a fact”.

Both side view maps from Chelsea’s 5-0 whipping of this very Swans last period.

It gives them an unpredictability that makes them an even more risky proposition.

Swansea have made four signings so far this summer: Eder from Sporting Braga, Andre Ayew from Marseille, Franck Tabanou from St Etienne, and Kristoffer Nordfeldt from Heerenveen.

“Down there we were excellent for 45 minutes last season and if we can produce 90 minutes like that it will be great”, Monk said.

“I am very happy here”, the Pole told Swansea’s official website.

“What is exciting is that we are good young ages, and there is that competitiveness between us which is good and good for the league as well”.

But while Monk insisted taking charge of England is his ultimate goal, his focus, for the foreseeable future at least, remains on managing Swansea.

A below-par league campaign began with an impressive 4-1 win over Swansea in September 2011, which was a high point of Chelsea’s Premier League season. I wish they were sleepers.

The Chelsea team is more or less set, apart form who is going to play up front with Diego Costa’s hamstrings playing up again, so it is far more interesting to look at Swansea’s team and how they’ll hurt Chelsea.

‘You could see the first day, they aren’t so exhausted and don’t use them – they are too cool to be in there, ‘ Monk laughed.
