WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will be questioned October 17 at Ecuador’s embassy in London over rape allegations, Swedish prosecutors said Wednesday.

Swedish prosecutors said the questioning will be conducted by an Ecuadorian prosecutor.

Last month, the Ecuadorian Embassy confirmed it would allow prosecutors to question Assange.

Mr Assange is accused of rape in an investigation stemming from his visit to Sweden in 2010.

Two Swedish officials, including chief prosecutor Ingrid Isgren and a police investigator will also be present to ask questions through the Ecuadorian prosecutor who will later submit a report to Sweden, the statement said. Assange denies the allegations.

In February, a UN Working Group found that Sweden and the United Kingdom were violating Assange’s rights by detaining him without charge, and called for his release and compensation. The Swedish prosecution will then decide whether to pursue the investigation further. However, the UK Foreign Office has called for the United Nations decision to be reviewed, saying Assange was staying in the embassy voluntarily and that the UK had a legal duty to extradite him to Sweden.

In 2010, WikiLeaks published classified USA military and diplomatic documents in one of the largest information leaks in US history.
