Sweden optimistic over questioning Assange in London

The plans were revealed, ironically, in leaked documents.

Swedish prosecutors offered in March to question Assange in London, dropping their previous demand that he come to Sweden to answer to the 2010 allegations.

“Assange could leave in fancy dress or try a discreet exit”.

The papers disclosed that was ruled out by embassy officials because Scotland Yard deployed body heat scanners outside the embassy.

Now, documents seen by the Ecuadorian journalist Fernando Villavicencio, suggest that staff, who have allegedly become increasingly frustrated by the Australian’s presence, deliberated over his escape – even suggesting he try fancy dress.

A proposal to hide him in a diplomatic vehicle leaving the embassy was quickly dismissed because of surveillance by the Metropolitan Police, which allegedly then involved 50 men covering 24 hours a day and two vans.

Swedish officials said Tuesday they are optimistic about reaching a general agreement on legal assistance with Ecuador which could pave the way to questioning WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in London on outstanding accusations against him. Assange believes his situation will be resolved in the next two years.

In January 2013 another incident occurred in which a loud crash was heard from inside Assange’s quarters in the embassy just after 6am.

The guard took photographs of a tall bookcase which was lying face-down in the room.

Rogue death threats aren’t Assange’s only concerns.

It continued that his behaviour was causing stress to those around him, “especially the personnel who work in the embassy, mainly women”. However, Ecuador President Rafael Correa said a temporary travel document that was issued in London in collaboration with Assange was invalid after other diplomats said they feared Assange would be perceived as being in charge.

The 44-year-old has denied the allegations, amid fears that any attempt to travel to Sweden will result in him being extradited to the United States, where he is under investigation for potential breaches of the Espionage Act.
