Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Brad Miers said the man had been spearfishing and had speared a trout, which attracted a school of mackerel and then the shark, which was up to 3 metres long.

Allan Countryman, 31, was bleeding heavily due to deep cuts on his forearms and injuries to his leg after the shark mauled the fisherman in open water near Miall Island off Yeppoon on Saturday.
The man suffered serious injuries to his hands and arms during the attack.
He was being treated at the scene before being transferred to the hospital at Rockhampton, Queensland Ambulance Service said on Twitter.
‘One of our vessels came over and took the injured person on board, we were able to administer first aid immediately, ‘ said Flotilla commander Arthur Hunt.
The attack took place shortly before lunchtime in waters off Rosslyn Bay, a resort in Queensland state popular with tourists visiting southern parts of the Great Barrier Reef.
After the shark retreated, Countryman swam back to his boat and made it aboard with the assistance of friends.
Fortunately the Yeppoon Coast Guard were training nearby reaching Mr Countryman within minutes, reported the Courier Mail.
Countryman fought off the shark, punching the animal several times according to the Guardian.

Mr Miers said the incident was the first shark attack he had heard of in the Rockhampton region.
