Swimming – Blume wins 50m freestyle gold for Denmark

Winston-Salem native Kathleen Baker, Lilly King, Dana Vollmer and Simone Manuel teaming up to prevail at the Rio Games on Saturday night is being recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee as the nation’s 1,000th gold medal in Summer Olympics history. It marked the U.S.’ second straight gold in the event.?

Manuel, who won gold Thursday night in the women’s 100M freestyle, took the silver in the women’s 50M freestyle.

Anthony Ervin, at 35 years old, won the gold medal for the men’s 50-meter freestyle on Friday, a full 16 years after his first gold medal.

Manuel, who attends Stanford University, previously earned a silver in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay. In London, she swam this relay with Rebecca Soni, Allison Schmitt, and Missy Franklin.

Phelps and Adrian were teammates on the 2012 gold-medal team.

The 22-year-old finished in 24.07 seconds, just two hundredths of a second ahead of Simone Manuel of the U.S. at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium on Saturday.

On the track, Jamaica continued its dominance in the women’s 100 meters as Elaine Thompson won the gold medal.

The women’s race was set for 10:49 p.m. local time in Brazil, which is an hour ahead of U.S. East Coast time. Australia won the silver and Denmark took the bronze.
