The Spruce Creek High grad won his heat this afternoon and swims next in one of tonight’s two semifinals for the 200 IM, beginning at 10:29. The event semifinal will be held Wednesday night with the final scheduled for Thursday.

Lochte was less than 15 hours removed from winning Gold as part of Tuesday night’s winning USA effort in the 4×200 relay. Lochte posted the fastest time in the event with a 1:57.38.

Though Phelps estimated the pair only got about five hours of sleep, it didn’t show in their performances. “Was a little sluggish getting up”.

The 31-year-old added: “I’ve been able to put my body through things like this over the years and hopefully I can keep it rolling one last time”.

NBC came in for more criticism on Tuesday, this time over its coverage of the men’s diving competition from Monday night.

Phelps is seeking a fourth straight Olympic gold medal in the 200 IM.

Pereira, swimming in the lane next to Phelps in their heat, excited the crowd by leading him over the butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke legs before the American pulled away with his long easy stroke in the freestyle.

Katinka Hosszu of Hungary won the 200-meter individual medley on Tuesday to complete a sweep of the Individual Medleys.
