Forensic specialists are examining the fluid used to ignite the fire.

The injured include a 7-year-old child, a girl and a boy, both 17, two women aged 34 and 43, and a man aged 50 (later reports indicate the youngest victim was six years old, not seven).

Police still are investigating the attacker’s motive.

Dozens of passengers were on the train when the attack occurred on the route between Buchs and Sennwald, just before the Salez Station, authorities said.

They say the 27-year-old suspect had at least one knife and poured out a flammable liquid, which caught fire. Police estimated that the damage amounted to about 100,000 Swiss francs ($ 103,000). In December 2015, a 33-year-old Swiss man broke into his neighbors’ house in Rupperswil and killed four people before setting the house on fire, an incident that shocked the country.

“The police were there for several hours and took pictures”, the paper quoted one Liechtenstein resident as saying after the search. The train stands near the station after a man attacked other passengers aboard the train at Salez, Switzerland, on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016.

A man who carried out a stabbing and arson attack on a Swiss train, killing one and injuring five others, has died in hospital, police said today. The six-year-old and 17-year-old remain in serious condition; the other victims have been treated and released from area hospitals.
