A 34-year-old woman and the 27-year-old suspect died from their injuries, according to police. The girls, aged 6 years and 17 years is in serious condition.

The authorities are working to determine what led the man to carry out the grisly attack on Saturday, on a moving train in the eastern Swiss region of Saint Gallen.

A man set a train carriage in Switzerland on fire using a flammable liquid and stabbed passengers, injuring six people including a six-year-old child, police said.

The attack took place on Saturday at around 2:20 p.m, just as the train approached Salez station, between Buchs and Sennwald on the Südostbahn line in the canton of St Gallen in north eastern Switzerland.

Five passengers on the train were wounded in the attack and a sixth person on the train platform, the 50-year-old man, was wounded as he pulled the burning suspect off the train, police said.

One woman and the attacker were “very seriously injured”, Kruesi told AFP, adding that both their lives were in danger.

Two passengers remain in a serious condition, BBC reports.

The woman who died had been doused with a lot of the flammable liquid, leading to speculation she might have been the target.

Neighbours described the attacker as a “loner”, who was tall, thin and lanky, with glasses, the paper said. He said it remained unclear if the attacker knew any of the victims.

Police did not provide any details on the identities or nationalities of the victims.
