Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka pulls out of Rio Olympics

Wawrinka said he aggravated the injury while playing in the Rogers Cup last week. He lost in the semifinals in Toronto.

A statement issued by Wawrinka’s management company said: “After a medical examination by his doctor in Geneva, the current world number four has to withdraw from the Olympic Games which will start in Rio de Janeiro later this week”.

The Swiss star, who is reportedly struggling with a back injury, joins compatriot Roger Federer in withdrawing in another blow to the tournament. After Beijing (2008) and London (2012), I wanted to live these Games in Brazil.

Federer is out for the rest of the year with an injured knee.

World number one Novak Djokovic is 10/11 favourite to win gold in Rio ahead of Britain’s world number two and defending champion Andy Murray priced at 9/4 with Rafael Nadal a 14/1 shot and Nishikori available at 25/1.

Belinda Bencic has also withdrawn from the Swiss Olympic tennis team, owing to pain in her wrist, leaving Switzerland with only Martina Hingis and Timea Bacsinszky.
