Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka pulls out of Rio Olympics due to injury
World number four Stan Wawrinka became the second high profile Swiss tennis player to quit the Rio Olympic Games, the Swiss Tennis Federation announced on Tuesday.

It means five of the world’s top 10 players will not feature at the Games, with Tomas Berdych, Milos Raonic and Dominic Thiem joining the Swiss duo on the sidelines.
The statement noted that Wawrinka “felt increasing pain” during his Rogers Cup run in Toronto last week and was advised by doctors following an MRI exam to “reduce his physical activity”.
The statement does not say where Wawrinka is injured. He lost in the semifinals in Toronto.
Wawrinka and Federer won gold in the men’s doubles in 2008 with Federer taking silver in the singles four years later in London.
The 31-year-old has now joined countryman Roger Federer, the world number three, in withdrawing from Rio 2016, where the tennis competition is set to get underway on Saturday.
The Swiss were already reeling over the news that multiple Grand Slam victor Roger Federer had pulled out of contention for the South American showpiece, while the country also decided not to enter a mixed doubles team.
