Sylvester Stallone, Kate Winslet win Golden Globes

Actor, Drama: Jon Hamm, Mad Men. “A film is forever”. Instead, it was “The Revenant” – made with the same seamless cinematography of “Birdman” – that emerged triumphant on the same weekend it almost toppled the box office juggernaut “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” with a $38 million opening.

The pair, who were spotted embracing in the ballroom at the glamorous Los Angeles ceremony, first starred together in James Cameron’s Oscar-winning film in 1997 and later teamed up again for Revolutionary Road. Stepping to the podium, Scott wondered, “Comedy?” and answered with a skeptical wave of his hand.

Kate Winslet revealed backstage at the 73rd Golden Globes that she was so convinced she wasn’t winning the best supporting actress honor for her performance in Steve Jobs that she had booked a massage immediately following the show.

“I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa”, said Stallone in concluding his remarks, “for being the best friend I ever had”.

Though security was especially tight to guard against terrorism, the Gervais-led Globes evidenced little of the seriousness that marks most award shows or the teary-eyed acceptances speeches.

A win by Leonardo DiCaprio for his rugged turn in pioneer tale “The Revenant” could foreshadow a long-sought best actor Oscar. There is so much bleeping we aren’t quite sure what’s going on. “Then he took a phone call and abruptly said, ‘Gotta go!’ and then he was gone”. “Not even Sean Penn will find me”, he said, pausing for a swig.

DiCaprio was saluted with a standing ovation Sunday night from the audience at the Beverly Hilton hotel. In a particularly awkward encounter, he and Mel Gibson stood arm-in-arm after exchanging insults. “Wait a minute. I waited 20 years for this”. She apologized backstage for her omission, saying: “I forgot to mention her in my speech, because I never thought I’d be making one!”

All in all, it was a very good night for 20th Century Fox, which released both films, as well as Joy, which was recognized when the top comedy actress prize went to Jennifer Lawrence. “He is also the only person that Ben Affleck hasn’t been unfaithful to”.

“The Revenant”, set in 1823 Montana and South Dakota, and was inspired by the experiences of frontiersman and fur trapper Hugh Glass, was in competition in the best motion picture – drama category with “Carol”, which was leading this year’s nomination pack for the Golden Globes.

Citing the crowded categories, Winslet remarked: “What an incredible year for women in film”.
