Sylvester Stallone leads night of surprises at Golden Globes

She salutes the show’s writers and says co-star Dominic West deserves a category for “best performance in a role that makes every woman hate him”.

BBC drama Wolf Hall was named best limited series or TV movie and producer Colin Callender was joined by stars Damian Lewis and Mark Rylance as he accepted the award and made a plea to protect BBC funding.

Though “Steve Jobs” failed to win over many critics or moviegoers, Danny Boyle’s drama about the Apple co-founder earned best screenplay for Aaron Sorkin and best supporting actress for Kate Winslet, her fourth Globe in 11 nominations.

The Golden Globes will be handed out at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles at 5pm local time (1am Monday GMT). Actors in both shows – Christian Slater for “Mr. Robot” and Gabriel Garcia Bernal for “Mozart in the Jungle” – also won.

Denzel Washington was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment”.

In the best foreign movie category, Hungarian Holocaust drama “Son of Saul” was the victor. He has proved a controversial choice in the past because of his irreverent jokes about the famous faces in attendance at the ceremony and this year has promised to “bite the hand that feeds me”.

Gervais spared little time before laying into the HFPA and the awards’ network, NBC, which he noted had no nominations. The Comedy film awards largely went to films no one would label as comedy. One of his three Globes, Gervais said, he stuffs up his rear.
