Sylville Smith shooting: Milwaukee imposes curfew to quell rioting
Meanwhile, City Sheriff David Clarke ordered the closure of a park nearby the protest site from 6 p.m.to 6 a.m., and the schedule will continue until further notice. The camera footage is with the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation, which has declined to release it pending the ongoing investigation.

Almost 40 percent of Milwaukee’s 600,000 residents are black, and they are heavily concentrated on the north side.
“I’m not going to say he was an angel”.
The businesses that burned included a BMO Harris branch, a BP gas station, an O’Reilly Auto Parts store and a beauty supply store. An 18-year-old was shot near the intersection.
The area around Sherman Park erupted in violence Saturday night in the hours after a man, who police said was armed with a stolen gun, was shot and killed by an officer after a traffic stop.
This allows the prosecutor to make a decision on whether or not to criminally charge the law enforcement officer, according to the state DOJ.
Milwaukee’s police chief says an 18-year-old man suffered a single gunshot wound to the neck during unrest on the city’s north side, but that his life is not in danger.
Several police officers have been targeted and shot dead across the nation in recent weeks – including five in Dallas – following an outcry over the deaths of unarmed African Americans at the hands of police.
At a news conference just after midnight, Mayor Tom Barrett said the situation appeared to be calming after a riotous scene in which as many as 100 protesters skirmished with police, torching a squad auto and tossing a brick through the window of another.
Another poster threatened to “shoot him right in his head”.
It was “an error in narrative to assume” that because police shot someone, the shooting is controversial, “so let’s have a riot”, Flynn said. He did not say what would happen to teens who are found outside in Milwaukee past the curfew deadline.
“We have unrest happening in the city and we want peace”. Three police squad cars were damaged and 14 people were arrested, authorities said.
“The (communist group) showed up, and actually they’re the ones who started to cause problems”, Flynn said at a news conference Monday. The officer is staying with relatives out of town, Flynn said.
“In an information vacuum, people tend to fill that vacuum with their own narrative”, said Bueermann. Milwaukee’s ShotSpotter system, which tries to detect gunfire, was activated 30 times. The 24-year-old officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative duty. “What really has been a major, major source of support has been the faith community”, said Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett. He indicated there have been no signs that outside groups, possibly from Chicago, have been in the Sherman Park neighborhood.
The problems began Saturday afternoon when police stopped a rental auto that was driving suspiciously, Flynn said. “There are a lot of really good people who live in this neighborhood”.
Four officers were injured, and 17 people were arrested.
Barrett renewed his call for state officials to release a video of Saturday night’s shooting in hopes it would convince angry protesters that deadly force against Sylville K Smith, 23, was justified.
