Syndergaard Becomes 2nd Mets Pitcher to Homer Twice in a Game

Syndergaard hit a solo home run off Los Angeles Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda in the third inning, then smacked another one in the fifth, this time a three-run shot.

Thor’s towering blast was the first multi-homer game by a pitcher since Micah Owings (now an outfielder) did it in 2007, and the first time a Mets pitcher did it since Walt Terrell in 1983.

Ricco said Syndergaard met with Mets doctor David Altchek following his start against the San Francisco Giants on May 1, when the 23-year-old right-hander allowed four runs over 5 2/3 innings.

New York Mets’ Noah Syndergaard, right, celebrates his three-run home run with Eric Campbell during the fifth inning of a baseball game against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Los Angeles, Wednesday, May 11, 2016. He went 8 innings giving up two runs on six hits. He struck out again in the eighth with one out and no one on base.

Syndergaard improved to 3-2 with a 2.53 ERA. “But if he doesn’t get the bunt down, you might as well hit a homer”. He allowed only two runs and struck out five.

The last major league pitcher to homer twice in a game was Arizona’s Micah Owings, who accomplished the feat against Atlanta on August 18, 2007.

Hatcher aided Maeda’s cause when he got out of a bases-loaded jam, striking out Syndergaard and Curtis Granderson to end the sixth.

Jeurys Familia allowed a run in the ninth, but still earned his MLB-leading 12 save of the season.

Having surrendered zero runs while pitching at least six innings in three of six outings, the last thing Mets nation wants to hear is any news regarding one of their pitchers and elbow tightness or inflammation.

Steven Matz will not make his start this Saturday against the Rockies due to left elbow soreness, Terry Collins told reporters on Wednesday, May 11.

Dodgers: INF-OF Alex Guerrero played his second game at Class A Rancho Cucamonga as part of a rehab assignment.

At the plate, Syndergaard left his biggest impression with two no-doubters against Kenta Maeda (3-2).

Wednesday’s win improved the Mets record to 4-3 on this road swing with the series finale tonight and a marquee match-up of Bartolo Colon (3-1, 2.82) vs. Clayton Kershaw (4-1, 2.02) on tap.
