Syria conflict: Opposition unveils transition plan
The High Negotiations Committee (HNC), which represents more than 30 groups seeking to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, revealed its 25-page political transition plan for Syria at a conference in London on Wednesday.

Presidents Putin and Obama met recently at the G20 summit and discussed Syria but failed to reach an agreement.
Syria’s criticism of Mr Johnson comes after the world’s chemical weapons watchdog announced that it would investigate suspected use of chlorine gas in Aleppo, north Syria.
The HNC’s “Vision for Syria” was unveiled in London by its general co-ordinator, Riyad Hijab, who defected in 2012 while serving as prime minister.
“The Assad regime must now respond with convincing ideas of its own, not bombing, shelling and sieges”, he said in a statement.
They come as the armed opposition inside Syria is losing ground on multiple fronts, including becoming besieged once again in Aleppo city, and the Syrian government began releasing 169 prisoners in exchange for the return of the bodes of five Russian soldierskilled when their helicopter was shot down.
This would see a mix of opposition figures and current government representatives running the country prior to UN-supervised elections, he said. He repeatedly said Assad was not trustworthy and was unlikely to comply with any agreement.
He described the committee as representing “a future for Syria that goes beyond the Assad regime”.
He also used his article to accuse Assad of “barbaric military tactics” in the ongoing conflict and criticised Russia’s “seemingly indefensible conduct” in backing him.
In the meantime, he noted, those who suffer the most under the tyranny of declining dictatorships grow in desperate frustration at the worldwide community’s failure to stop the atrocities committed against them.
Hijab said the greatest challenge in achieving political transition came from the outside powers, pointing the finger at Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, other regional militias, and above all, Russian Federation for protecting Assad.
The meeting will bring together France, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, Jordan, Italy and the European Union along with Turkey and the host country, the United Kingdom.
Meanwhile, intense fighting between insurgents and Syrian government troops in the country’s central Hama province displaced about 100,000 people in a period of eight days between late August and early September, according to the United Nations humanitarian agency.
