Syria opposition unveils transition plan
The High Negotiations Committee (HNC) proposed a six- month negotiations with President Bashar al-Assad, accompanied by a full ceasefire, the BBC reports.

Bashar Assad would then be removed from power and a transitional administration made up of opposition figures and current government and civil society representatives put in place for 18 months.
The proposal also comes amid fragile efforts by the USA and Russian Federation on a deal to reduce the fighting in Syria.
The Executive Framework for a Political Solution is based on the 2012 Geneva communique and United Nations resolutions, Hijab said. During this period, both parties pledged to abide by a temporary ceasefire, lift the blockade to allow the access of the Syrian population to humanitarian aid and release war prisoners.
It also calls for the “departure of Bashar al-Assad and his clique”.
HNC leader Riad Hijab, speaking in London ahead of the talks, insisted that regime leaders who killed Syrians “cannot have a role in the future of Syria and in this transitional phase at all”.
Changes to the constitution would be agreed, the outcomes of a national dialogue implemented, and elections held under United Nations supervision.
“We want to rid ourselves of extremism and terrorism”.
“The vision is a response to the hopes and aims of the Syrian people – for emancipation from dictatorship; the establishment of a new social contract for Syria; building a political system that protects freedoms, safeguards individual rights and that is founded upon the principles of liberty, equality, citizenship, and justice”, Hijab said.
Russian Federation and the U.S. are seeking to revive a ceasefire in Syria and coordinate strikes against the Islamic State group and other jihadists.
Representatives of Syria’s government and opposition held talks in Geneva in late April.
In earlier remarks on Wednesday, Hijab said that Assad should not remain in office for more than six months during the political transition phase.
He added: “There is still a chance that this vision can be made to work”.

The details are due to be discussed by the HNC and foreign affairs ministers from the group known as the “Friends of Syria” (Paolo Gentiloni will be representing Italy).
