Syria’s Cease-fire Holding but Aid Hasn’t Reached Aleppo Yet
The convoy of aid was supposed to head towards Aleppo on Wednesday, but Ban said the security arrangements were still not in place, despite a truce agreed by the United States and Russian Federation that went into effect two days ago.

A nationwide ceasefire, brokered by Moscow and Washington, came into force in Syria at sunset on Monday.
Initially, the deal forged by USA secretary of state John Kerry and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, allows the Syrian air force to continue strikes in areas where ISIL or Jabhat Fatah Al Sham (formerly known as Al Nusra Front) are present.
“There was agreement that as a whole, despite sporadic reports of violence, the arrangement is holding, and violence is significantly lower in comparison with previous days and weeks”, Toner said.
As part of the agreement, the USA and Russian Federation aim to reduce violence for a week straight before they begin coordinating military strikes against the Islamic State (Isis) and Nusra Front, ABC reported.
But the predominant worldwide focus at the moment is sending much-needed aid to besieged areas.
Despite that, two trucks in the Turkish controlled northern Syrian town of Jarablus did get through on Wednesday, delivering food and toys.
Besieged civilians were still waiting desperately for relief in Syria’s war-battered second city of Aleppo, with 20 United Nations aid trucks stranded on the Turkish border over security concerns.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged the United States and Russian Federation to push all warring sides in Syria to allow safe passage for desperately needed aid to besieged civilians.
One of Syria’s most powerful factions, Jabhat Fatah al-Sham’s battlefield alliance with other insurgent groups makes it hard for the United States to target them without the danger of inflicting harm on other opposition groups.
Supplies are in warehouses ready for transportation to rebel-held east Aleppo and other besieged areas as soon as they are cleared to enter, said spokeswoman Krista Armstrong of the International Committee of the Red Cross. “It’s crucially important that the necessary security arrangement should be given so that they be allowed to cross the lines”. We are working very hard.
While the ceasefire is largely holding, incidents of shelling by various rebel forces and air strikes by pro-government forces have been reported.
“From the first minute Russia’s been meeting its obligations to enforce the cessation of hostilities in Syria”, the defense ministry said in the statement.
But many Islamist rebel groups cooperate closely with Fateh al-Sham, and the biggest of them – the powerful Ahrar al-Sham group – has criticized the terms of the Russian-US deal. “The greatest number of violations is associated with these groups”. -Russian peace deal, United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said on Thursday.
British Prime Minister Theresa May has told her parliament Syria’s future has become intrinsically linked with the rest of world’s.
For their part, opposition forces said they had recorded some 28 various violations by government troops on Tuesday. A day earlier, the government said rebels had targeted the Castello road, the only remaining artery by which aid reaches the eastern, rebel section of Aleppo.
