Syria’s tolerated opposition due in Moscow for talks

Take note that Saudi Arabia recently signed a 0 billion agreement with Russia’s state-owned corporation, Rosatom to build 16 nuclear power plants to generate more than 20 thousand megawatts of electricity. President Assad, who belongs to the Alawite minority (an offshoot of Shi’ite Islam) is backed by Russian Federation, Iran and the Lebanese Shi’ite group Hizbollah, which has also sent troops to fight for the regime. A number of other senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards commanders have been killed in the conflict in recent months. The Kurds, meanwhile, have been putting up a very fearless fight against Islamic State in both Syria and Iraq.

In a statement on Monday, the 15-member UN Security Council endorsed the initiative by the UN special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, which calls for resolving the Syrian crisis through talks among “intra-Syrian working groups”.

Saudi Arabia and some of the Gulf States, on the other hand, even though belonging to the anti-Islamic State coalition, bear responsibility for supporting some of the Islamist groups operating in the anti-Assad camp, some of whom are believed to have ties to al-Nusra. However, the Syrian conflict has pointed to a number of intelligence failings by the US, namely that it didn’t anticipate how determined Assad was to remain in power at all costs, nor did it foresee the rise of the Islamic State.

Then again the United States can’t claim that its Syria policy has been a success story.

“They are after disintegrating Iraq and Syria”, the Leader said, but noted that Washington’s plots will fall flat.

Some of the diplomatic encounters of the last week, however, could suggest that the global community is finally willing to give diplomacy a chance in Syria.

Head of Center for Strategic Research of Iran’s Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati made the remarks in a meeting with Syria’s Minister of Information Omran al-Zoubi who is in a visit to Tehran to participate in the 8th Summit of the Islamic Radio and Television Union (IRTVU). The US and Saudi Arabia helped created ISIL, but it turned around to attack the Kingdom twice, and the oil war that the two were cooperating in somehow spun out of control to inflict damage on both of them and turn the two partners into fierce energy rivals.

“The people and government of Syria have the key role in this process”, she added.

Professor Rezvan explained that Saudi Arabia is trying to improve its relations with Russian Federation because of the current developments happening in the Middle East. He added that the Iran nuclear deal pushed the Saudis to reach out to Russian Federation because they felt that the United States let them down despite being partners for many years.

“This is a very promising and significant direction, which will increase the supply of energy in Iran, while at the same time ensuring full compliance with non-proliferation, and also respecting Iran’s right to have a peaceful nuclear program”, said Sergei Lavrov.
