Syria Says It Downed Israeli Jet; IDF Denies Claim

The incident was the fifth case since last week in which fighting in Syria has spilled over into Israel, and the first since a U.S. The Syrian surface-to-air missiles did not hit the Israeli aircraft, nor did they endanger them, the IDF said.

Syrian state television seized on the regime’s claim of a successful interception, featuring a series of interviews with experts and pundits who praised use of the missiles, according to Israeli news site Ynet.

“At no point was the safety of the IDF compromised”, the Israeli military said on Tuesday, referring to the Israeli Defence Force. Israel is denying Syrian government claims that its forces shot down a warplane and a drone.

Fighting between government forces and rebel groups continued in Quneitra after the cease-fire started Monday at sundown but calmed by Tuesday morning, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a United Kingdom -based opposition monitoring group.

Despite his forces being part of the truce, President Assad vowed to take back the country from “terrorists” – a term used to describe all opposition groups. It is first time fighting in Syria has spilled over into Israel since the USA and Russian Federation signed a ceasefire.
